When we, Talea (born 2000) and Lucca (born 1999), met and entered into a relationship, Talea came from an atheistic background and found Jesus through Lucca’s family.
After three years, a separation led us both into a deeper relationship with God. He brought us back together and has accompanied our marriage since 2023.
We began to fully trust Him with our lives and asked God in the summer of 2023 about His will for our future and education/studies.
We both clearly heard the same answer, even though we were standing in different places in the worship hall: We were to dedicate a year to God and go abroad to serve Him.
It quickly became clear that our ministry should be with children and through God’s guidance we ended up at the YMCA Margarita. This is a kind of day care center for children and young people on Isla Margarita (Venezuela).
Founded in 2021, YMCA Margarita looks after 60-70 children every week. As the children only have school twice a week due to a lack of teachers, educational support is particularly important. They learn reading, writing, mathematics and logical thinking according to their age groups. There are also sports and creative activities such as swimming, soccer, handicrafts and gardening. New volunteers are always coming in and organizing various programs, including youth group lessons with Bible stories.
The staff meet with the children’s parents every two weeks. There is room to talk about issues of care and upbringing. As many children experience domestic violence and neglect, the YMCA staff talk to the parents about their role and values in parenting.
God is wonderfully at work and so, in mid-2023, a house was purchased and made available by some YMCA volunteers on Isla Margarita. The director of the YMCA Margarita and her board team see themselves placed in this place by Jesus. Despite all the challenges and problems that Venezuela is currently facing, her heart goes out to the children, their education and the Christian work of the YMCA.
We want to bring Venezuelan people, especially children and families, closer to God’s saving message and the Father’s love.
1 John 4:16 and 19: And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him. We love because he first loved us.
We pass on this love by spending time with the children and supporting the YMCA’s projects. Through educational and spiritual teaching, we help children and young people to better orient themselves and develop prospects beyond poverty and crime. We want to teach the YMCA employees God’s word through Bible studies and devotions (as soon as our Spanish is good enough 😉 so that they can apply this in their lives and pass it on to others.
We are unspeakably grateful for everyone who supports our ministry at YMCA Margarita financially and in prayer. For updates on what we are experiencing with God and prayer requests, please sign up for our newsletter.
