Gut Avinoon – that’s how a warm greeting sounds in the afternoon in Papua New Guinea. Here, a brief exchange often means more than just “hello.” This country is also known as “The Land of the Unexpected.” And indeed, there is hardly anywhere else in the world where cultural diversity is as great as it is here. Over 840 languages are spoken, each with its own history and its own sound.
When God placed it on my heart many years ago to become a health and pediatric nurse, I had no idea what His plan was. For 17 years, I worked in a large hospital in Germany, caring for children, experiencing joy and sorrow, accompanying families in difficult moments. Today I know that all these experiences were preparation for where I am now.
Even as a little girl, I was allowed to accompany my parents on mission trips. Again and again, I saw and felt how God works in the remotest corners of the earth. This awakened in me the desire to go myself, to go where help is needed. It was practically put into my cradle.
Today, I live in Papua New Guinea—half at the YWAM (Youth With A Mission) base in the capital city of Port Moresby, half on a ship belonging to the base that regularly takes us to the most remote villages in the Western Province. We provide medical care to people who would otherwise have no access to doctors or medication: we vaccinate children, offer prenatal care, educate people about health issues, hold general consultation hours, and much more… Often we travel for hours by boat – and are greeted with smiles that say more than a thousand words.
Our ship sails under a special motto: John 10:10 – “The thief comes only to steal, slaughter, and destroy. But I bring life – and life in abundance.”
This verse has come alive for me. When I first entered one of these remote villages in early 2024, I felt how much God’s heart burns for these people. It was as if He had placed a piece of that fire in my heart—and it has been burning in me ever since. My deepest desire is not only to bring medical help, but also to share a piece of this burning Father’s heart with the people. Because true healing does not only happen in the body—it begins in the heart.
